It’s Sober September, and it actually helps!

Has your summer been full of wine all day weekends? Then you might be ready for a little reset and recharge before fall. Just like lots of folks give up alcohol for Dry January after the holidays, now people are taking a month-long break from drinking with Sober September.

This trend is relatively new, but it makes a lot of sense. Many people spend the summer season enjoying the long summer days with a hard seltzer in hand and they’re ready to adopt more healthy habits, like temporarily breaking up with booze, before fall arrives. And even if it’s only for a month, as in the case of Sober September, researchers say there are benefits to briefly abstaining from alcohol.

“The simple act of taking a month off alcohol helps people drink less in the long term,” explains psychologist Dr. Richard de Visser.” Interestingly, these changes in alcohol consumption have also been seen in the participants who didn’t manage to stay alcohol-free for the whole month — although they are a bit smaller.”
